What is a Google Raincoat? It’s a raincoat prototype that extends from a building and shields public sidewalks from the rain. The prototype was intended to create outdoor spaces in Quayside, a 12-acre high-tech neighbourhood on the waterfront in Toronto. Researchers at Sidewalk Labs calculated that the Toronto waterfront is only comfortable 30 percent of the time. The prototype’s sensor technology would collect data from the surrounding environment and tell the raincoat when to open and close.
