Google is trying something new in the form of a water purification device that uses silver nanoparticles to purify water sourced from urban waste. These particles eliminate viruses, bacteria, and pathogens from water. Google plans to sell these devices all over the world in the next few years, and is currently looking for partners to develop these technologies. What makes this system so interesting is that it’s a green technology that can be used in almost any city in the world.

A growing population and climate changes are creating a problem of water scarcity. The United Nations predicts that by 2050, 768 million people will lack access to safe drinking water. Innovations in water purification are a great way to tackle this problem while also improving sanitation. Cities are already rising to this challenge. In Tunisia, for example, green infrastructure and water-purification systems are being built for many of the largest cities. Meanwhile, a large portion of the country’s wastewater is reused for irrigation purposes. Farmers in the Tula Valley in Tunisia use untreated municipal wastewater to irrigate 90 000 acres of land. Moreover, natural purification is occurring throughout the transportation of food and is a necessary part of the food-processing process.

The urbanizing food-energy-water nexus is a complex system. It is sensitive to human economic development, social capital building, and climate change. The nexus can also be considered an embedded systems model. The food and water system model in action can be further developed by deploying it in scenarios that reflect different urban food systems and gathering inputs from stakeholders and sustainability practitioners. However, field testing was not performed in this study.
