It is a part of China’s drive towards a clean energy economy by promoting the use of electric energy as a substitute for coal.

The brand State Grid is admired in China because of its corporate social responsibility. Its tagline, “A balance between consideration and authority,” aligns with the national brand projected by the government. Moreover, three smaller Chinese brands made it into the Brand Finance Utilities 50 league table this year. GD Power Development, Datang Power, and CGN are all part of the power company, with a combined market value of US$1.4 billion.

This aggressive smart grid initiative in China poses challenges to the United States. But at the same time, it also poses tremendous opportunities for U.S. companies across the value chain. In some cases, these investments will go to U.S. products, while others may go towards paying licensing fees. But one thing is clear: China’s government is unlikely to support the one-grid-to-rule-all strategy of State Grid.
